Change of heart

A fifth of families who consent to donation of a dead relative’s organs for transplant regret the decision a year later. A similar proportion who withhold consent also change their minds, according to a study in Psychosomatic
Medicine.
There is a worldwide shortage of donor organs, but little research on the psychological factors that influence the decision to donate, says Barry Hong, of Washington University in St. Louis, who led the study. Data so far have suggested that churchgoers are more likely to have second thoughts.

Pollutant: Mercury
Source: Coal-burning power plants

Mercury, a natural by-product of burnt coal, can cause serious harm to pregnant women and infants.  According to the National Wildlife Federation, coal-burning power plants in Ohio emit mercury into lakes, rivers and streams in Ohioand the Great Lakes region. While government mandated pollution controls exist in Ohio, utility companies have not been required to establish mercury controls. Ohio generates approximately 90 percent of its electricity from coal.
